Massage Therapy in Minnesota

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a hands-on practice that involves the systematic manipulation of soft tissue—muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia—to support health and well-being. Techniques may include pressing, rubbing, or moving parts of the body to promote relaxation, circulation, and mobility.

Massage therapists in Minnesota work with people in pain to help relieve tension, ease movement, and support recovery after injury or illness. Sessions may also address sleep, stress, and overall quality of life.

Massage therapy is generally considered safe for most people. Rare side effects are more likely with vigorous deep-tissue techniques or in individuals with certain medical conditions. Talk with your provider if you have any concerns before beginning massage therapy.

Massage therapy is more than relaxation—it’s a proven approach to support pain relief and healing.

How Massage Therapy
May Help with Pain

Massage therapy may help with pain by addressing physical tension, calming the nervous system, and supporting the body's own healing processes.

Research suggests that massage can:

  • Reduce muscle tightness and trigger points
  • Improve circulation to affected areas
  • Lower stress hormones that contribute to pain sensitivity
  • Promote relaxation and calm the nervous system
  • Support joint mobility and range of motion

Many people with acute or chronic pain use massage to manage:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Joint pain
  • Post-surgical discomfort
  • Tension from stress or overuse

Massage therapy can be combined with other treatments—physical therapy, behavioral health, acupuncture—as part of a whole-person approach to pain care.

Disclaimer

In many states, massage therapists must graduate from an approved program, pass a national board exam, and maintain licensure. Minnesota does not currently have a statewide massage licensing board. For this reason, No Pain Minnesota lists only massage providers who are board certified by the National Board Certification in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NBCTMB) or the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). There is no Minnesota state specific massage licensing board.
